Dr.
Lynn Margolies is a Ph.D. experienced, licensed psychologist and
former Harvard Medical School faculty and fellow. She was trained
(internship and post-doctoral work) at a Harvard teaching hospital
and has been in private practice since 1989. Her experience is
broad, having treated both high-functioning people experiencing life
stress, transitions, crisis, depression, anxiety, relationship
conflicts, as well as people struggling with more serious trauma or
chronic conditions. Working with individuals, couples, and families,
she offers consultation, short- and long-term counseling and
psychotherapy.
Her approach is active and empowering with integrity
and high standards of care. Dr. Margolies' treatment orientation is
tailored to the needs of the individual patient(s). Her manner is
skilled, respectful, empathic, strong, open-minded, caring, and
supportive, with a sense of humor. Dr. Margolies grew up in New York
City and Puerto Rico. Dr. Margolies has worked in inpatient,
outpatient, residential treatment, and private practice settings, as
well as provided consultation to the police, courts, hospitals, and
universities. Her academic training, clinical and life experience,
and personal style together give her the advantage of understanding
and feeling comfortable with many types of people and situations.
Dr. Margolies has appeared in the media on the news and talk shows,
commenting on current news events and trauma. She has been
interviewed by the Boston Globe, Boston Herald, and the
Massachusetts Psychologist providing information/consultation on
relationship, career, self-esteem, trauma/post-traumatic stress, and
professional/legal issues, and continues to enjoy offering this
community service.
Dr. Margolies was trained in a
broad spectrum of approaches to therapy and uses an eclectic
approach. (The different approaches offered by Dr. Margolies are
described in the Psychotherapy section, which explains these
approaches, which she often uses in combination, depending on the
patient and problem at hand.) She is well-versed in a range of
psychodynamic approaches and integrates these orientations with
family systems, cognitive-behavioral therapy and her own style,
which is active, energetic, problem-solving, intuitive, and
empowering, often with a sense of humor.
As a therapist, Dr.
Margolies is skilled, conscientious, empathic, respectful, caring,
strong, open-minded, knowledgeable, instructive, and supportive.
Most patients and problems are best treated with a blend of
approaches in order to provide the maximum benefits psychotherapy
can offer, allowing for effective treatment of different aspects of
a problem during all phases of the process. What works ! at one
point in therapy may not be as helpful at another point, and some
people and problems are more suited to one approach versus another.
It is, therefore, important to be able to work flexibly. Because of
her experience and openness to using different approaches, Dr.
Margolies has the advantage of being able to tailor the therapy to
what is most helpful and best suited to the patient.
